It's National Bratwurst Day!
The history of the Bratwurst comes from Europe, specifically Germany, dating back hundreds of years. These typically pork-filled sausages were a delicacy for German folk. They are traditionally served in a bread roll topped with mustard, paired wonderfully with sauerkraut and potatoes. American culture incorporates the bratwurst into summer grilling alongside hot dogs and burgers. Whatever your preference, enjoying the Bratwurst is possible in many diverse and incredibly delicious ways! Celebrate with us today!
Bratwurst with Sauerkraut
Check out this quick and easy German-inspired recipe for our Fresh Bratwurst and sauerkraut.
Use Quality Ingredients:
1 Package of Cheshire Pork Fresh Bratwurst
1 Medium Onion - halved and sliced
2 Tbsp. Butter
2 Tsp. Caraway Seeds
1 Bottle Light Beer
3 C. Chicken or Vegetable Stock
4 C. Sauerkraut
Instructions:
Pour beer and the stock into a small stockpot. Place the bratwursts in the pot. Turn heat to medium and bring to a simmer. Simmer the bratwursts for 15 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Put the butter in a skillet over medium high heat. Add the onions and saute for 10-15 minutes until golden. Remove from the pan. Add the bratwursts to the pan and return to the heat. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, turning frequently to get an even caramelized sear on the sausages.
Once the bratwursts are done cooking, remove them from the skillet. Place the sauerkraut, onions, and caraway seeds in the skillet. Stir to combine. Place the bratwursts in the sauerkraut and onion mixture. Cover and cook on medium heat for about 5-7 minutes. Serve with German mustard and German beer!
